This writing lark isn’t always end-to-end fun you know, so I’m going to share the other side of it.
So far, three weeks into 2019, I haven’t written a word of fiction. I’m starting to get the shakes here. The thing is, this isn’t just a creative process, it’s also a business. And truth be told, we’re rubbish at the business side. Which is handy because we hate earning money and paying our mortgages.
So! For January, we decided it’s high time we put the focus on the business end, on trying to get to grips with it and leave the writing for next month. it has… not been fun. Unless staring, glassy-eyed, at excel sheets full of data is your idea of a good time. (maybe it is, I’m not judging you) (Okay, I AM judging you)
It’s boring, it takes ages, it’s often completely over my head, but here’s the thing: it’s necessary. If you want to follow in our footsteps and launch yourself into the indie world, it’s the sort of thing you’d need to get a firm handle on, too.
That’s the trade-off. You’re in control of what you write and of finding your audience, but you have to take care of all the other stuff, as well. So that’s what we’re doing this month, taking care of business. But blimey, I can’t wait to get going on the stories again!
Soon… so soon…
