Well, it’s officially the season of scare, with Halloween just a few days away, so I thought I’d point you in the direction of some scary stuff that I love to make you shiver as October draws to a close.
Just don’t blame me if you have nightmares…
The Haunting of Hill House
I just completed this ten episode series on Netflix, and oh my sweet baby Jesus, it is AMAZING.
It’s not just about creeps and frights (though there’s plenty of that), it’s about a deeply damaged family dealing with grief and past trauma. Uh, fun, right…?
The acting, the structure, the way the narrative hops around, is brilliant. The scares, the atmosphere, the payoffs you never saw coming… seriously, check this baby out. It’s my fave new thing this year.
The Witch
Oh boy, this recent film really got under my skin. There was one point, whilst watching this alone at home, that I leaned away from the screen saying, ‘Oh no,’ out loud. Which has not happened before. An insidious, creeping atmosphere, rather than blood and guts sort of film.
Oh, and like you, I would never think that a goat could be deeply scary.

A Head Full of Ghosts
After a creepy read? Then this recent-ish possession story (OR IS IT? OOOOH) by Paul Tremblay is an engrossing, quick, at times unnerving read.
His other two horror books, Disappearance at Devil’s Rock & The Cabin at the End of The World are also well worth grabbing.
